Quinta Tranquila is a restored traditional Portuguese house, tucked into a bend on the river Seixe which enters the sea at the beautiful award winning beach at Odeceixe, just 10 km away.

The construction of the house is typical of this region of Portugal.

It has half metre thick walls made from rammed earth, pounded into place by hand. We have chosen to use materials in the renovation of Quinta Tranquila that do not hinder the healthy attributes of earth construction, so rather than use energy intensive cement, we have used lime plasters and renders, which are carbon neutral and coloured by clay from the land itself. These plasters allow the walls to breathe, maintaining a healthy humidity for the occupants. The solidity of the walls helps the house provide a cool respite from the warmth of summer.

The property is off grid, powered by a solar electric system and hot water is also heated by the sun. Quinta Tranquila is well supplied with energy and having these systems in place easily enables us to be aware of our energy and water consumption.

Conscious to avoid the pollution involved in building processes, we have succeeded in sourcing many pre-used materials, so, for example, all the hardwood windows and doors in the house have been lovingly renovated, and should give many more years of service whilst adding a natural beauty to the farmhouse.

The setting is extremely calm and rich in flora and fauna. It covers 2.3 hectares of hillside and water meadows with the riverbank as it's border with the Alentejo province.

The river runs all year with very little human settlement upstream and is clean and deep enough to enjoy a refreshing dip. The plot is surrounded by natural woods and small scale farming. The house is located ideally for those wishing to enjoy the wild Atlantic coast or to soak up the peace of the countryside, connect with nature or access the Rota Vicentina walking trail network. In fact the area is so rich in flora and fauna that it has been selected for inclusion in Crossbill’s guide to Southern Portugal.
